Keywords to the concept

We used the recent days to think about the global concept of the visual identity.
The visual and textual research gave us a good feeling for the business and the graphical language we would like to use. Although the concept is in the initial stage, we cut down a few keywords to open a specific field in which we can explore our graphical oportunities:

1. General impression
generic / dynamic / organic / abstract

2. Typography
modern / legitimate / clean information layer

3. Form + Imagery
organic

4. Colour
-not yet specified-

We believe that the identity should be able to grow, change and develop over time, since the pool of music Mark accesses constantly evolves aswell. The genres, bands, moods, formations, styles are influenced by various factors. We think that this process should be visible in the design.
The Film- TV- and Advertising industry will be the main target group so we have to focus on the area where music and moving images come together. The keyword dynamic is obvious here.
With Form Music, Mark wants to move a bit away from techno- computeresque and artsy images, that were partially used in the artwork of his artists' releases for Vertical Form. We all agreed on a more organic look for Form Music.
Nonetheless, the typographic layer has to be well legible, clean and accurately structured.

We appreciate your comments!

Visual Research Pt.1

A few works that caught our attention during research.

More will follow as we will put our hands on the graphical concept next week.

The competitors and their websites

The core product of our work for Form Music will be the website, so we surfed the web for a few days to see how the competitors present themselves.
With only one exception
, these sites are mostly badly done in terms of graphic design and interface design.
Nearly every site forces you to register before you can have a look at their catalogue. Furthermore, only a few sites offer pre-listening of the tracks (e.g. SonyMusicFinder).
It is clear, that the process of licensing/clearing music is complicated with different rights in various countries, prices that need to be negotiated etc etc – But we think sites like these can be much improved. Here are the smaller businesses that operate in various countries or worldwide.

Peer Music [USA]

License Music [USA]

Quote

Evan Greenspan (owner of one of the biggest music-clearance companies in the country, EMG Inc]
«...The good news is that the media world is expanding and, along with it, so is the need for more and more music. The bad news, however, is that music budgets are simultaneously contracting. That presents an opportunity for independent musicians, if they can provide high-quality music that fits smaller budgets.»

New Order uses Bluetooth posters to send music clips direct to cellphones

The marketing campaign for the upcoming New Order (yes, that New Order — Blue Monday, anyone?) album, Waiting for the Sirens Call, marks an innovation in music promotion, with the development and display of digital interactive posters offering song clips, ringtones and photos that can be beamed directly to fans’ cellphones.

The posters use both infrared and Bluetooth to send the data directly to phones, bypassing network charges to fans or to the band’s label, and making New Order to first group to hand out free music clips direct to cellphones. The digital posters will be displayed in HMV stores in London and Manchester in the UK, sweeties — who said there’s no such thing as a free ringtone?

Bilder zum Fühlen

During research, I stumbled across an article in the german webzine «Die Gegenwart» about movie scores. Unfortunately, only available in German language.
By the way, the current issue covers the topic music in general. Take a look…

Leaving on a jetplane

Off to catch the train to Stansted Airport.

Goodbye London, we'll be back.

Awfully hot

Just came back from the Solid Steel night at the Ruby Lo in Soho and it was ace!
Local resident Strictly Kev plus special guests Chris Read, Treva Whateva and DK.

We were amazed by the great Ninja talents.

Ol' lads

This night we went to see Tomm, Dan and Lloyd from kleber at the Tea Bar.

Seb used to intern at kleber, so he really enjoyed seeing the lads again. Danny Brown from Noodlebox and James Lindall from Atomless were also there. We had a great evening. Cheers!

Take me out

The D, Seb and Simon had a big night out yesterday.
Walked all the way from Shoreditch to Angel to get a bowl of the ever so tasty Chili Chicken Ramen at Wagamama. Crossed the street for a pint at one of the most beautiful pubs called York. Went back to Shoreditch and shook our legs at the 333 till late.

This afternoon, Seb and D visited a really interesting exhibition called «You Are Here- The history of Information Design» at the Design Museum right next to the Tower Bridge. Recommended!

Back from meeting

The meeting with Mark went really well. We met him on Curtain Rd and headed straight to the next pub. Over a pint of lager, we talked about the what, when, where and who of Form Music for nearly two hours.

Back at Simon's place, we wrote down the essence of the meeting and ideas we had. Together with the research (next week), this paper will be the key to our graphical concept. We will upload our project schedule within the next week aswell.

Work's done for today. Let's head into the city...

Meeting with Mark

We came to London to have our first meeting with Mark Kirby from Vertical Form/Form Music. We'll meet him today at 1.00pm in front of his office and will head somewhere for a coffee.

This morning (dizzy heads from pints of Staropramen, Guinness, Red Stripe, Kronenbourg etc etc), we developed a questionnaire with all the questions we need to ask him about his new music licensing company.
Hopefully we'll have enough relevant information about Form Music when we leave London on friday.

Are you ready for the city? Is the city ready for you?

Just arrived in Shoreditch. Thanks to Simon, we got a place to lay our heads down at night.

We'll pop out to grab some food now...

Blog almost done!

The D is working on a new masthead for the site as I am putting all the content together.
Soon, we will have a section about who we are and what we are going to do with this site.

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, we uploaded a small site with a few of our worksamples. On this site, you are able to download The D's [25megs] and Seb's [2megs] portfolio.

More to come soon.

Sampler

by the D and Seb

About sampler

This site is part of a diploma by The D and Seb in Graphic-Design at the University of Applied Sciences, Zurich.

Together with Mark Kirby from Vertical Form we are developing a visual identity for a sideline of Vertical Form called Form Music which will provide music consultancy, supervision and licensing solutions to the TV, film and advertising industries.

Sampler is here to make communication between him and us a lot easier. We hope that every important step concerning our work will be comprehensible.
